One has to ask: are your trees in any shape for a Michigan winter? You may be left to wonder which of your fall chores are truly putting your yard in order and which can be put off till spring. Or perhaps you have been giving some thought to that limb by the roof and whether it is cause for concern.
Then you have come to the right spot. We are Turbo Tree Care, a company run locally in the Northern Detroit Metro area. Homeowners from Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties rely on us to put their trees in order before the cold weather makes its way in. For a discussion of what your property requires, pick up the phone at (586) 930-6357.
There is no better time for tree work in Michigan than the fall. With the cooler temperatures and the trees winding down, the effort you put in now will show when the ice and snow come. A few things we would have local homeowners consider this season.
Why do it in the fall?
Autumn is a good time for pruning and the like as trees become dormant; they are not expending energy on new growth but on the roots instead. Any cuts you make then will callus over by spring with less stress on the tree. You also get a better vantage point. When the leaves thin out you can see structural issues, a weak crotch or dead branches that were otherwise hidden. Better to put an end to them now than let the winter make something of them.
Things to put on your to-do list
Before the onset of winter we advise our clients in the Northern Detroit Metro to see to these matters:
- Put in some pruning of crossing or damaged branches so they do not break under the weight of snow and ice
- Get rid of limbs encroaching on power lines, the driveway or roof
- Do away with debris and leaves at the base of the tree
- Check for insect damage, fungus or disease
- See to any dead or dying trees liable to give way in a storm
- Have old stumps ground down to prevent rot or pests
You can do some of this yourself. But for anything at height or with heavy limbs near the house it is wiser to leave it to a crew with the proper equipment.
Make note of potential hazards
A Michigan winter will test a tree. The kind of wet snow and ice storms we get put a lot of strain on a branch and if it is weak it will come down. All too often it is on a car or fence, or worse, on top of someone.
Go for a look around and look up. Is there a large dead branch where people are walking or parking? Has a tree taken on a lean? Cracks at the trunk where the big limbs join? These are worth tending to while the conditions are still safe and calm.
Do not put off a tree that is in trouble
It is true you do not need to remove every tree that has an issue. Yet a tree that is unstable or for all intents and purposes dead is a risk to have over your home through the winter. It is much preferable to have it out of the way on your own terms than to be faced with a fallen tree in the middle of a storm.
We do removals, stump grinding, trimming and pruning for commercial and residential alike. Our equipment is of the professional sort, Stihl and RedMax saws, Rayco and Morbark grinders and chippers, and for the larger jobs we have lifts and dump trucks. If space is at a premium we will go in with a climbing harness and a power saw.
