What You Really Need to Know About Tree Removal

Removing a diseased or dead tree is an urgent task, especially in winter. The weight of snow and ice can bring down weakened trees easily, which poses a risk to anyone walking through your yard. But the tree removal process actually starts long before anyone shows up with a chainsaw.

You May Need a Permit

Chances are you’ll need a permit to remove the tree, even if it’s on your property only. Tree removal can be dangerous, and most cities and counties want to know that you’re doing it. Many tree services will help you get the permit.

Tree Removal and Stump Removal Are Separate Services

Take note of this important difference: Tree removal doesn’t include stump removal. Tree removal itself is just the removal of the trunk and canopy. If you want the tree service to also remove or grind up the stump, you must arrange for that specific service.

Removal Methods Vary

Tree services have more than one way to remove a tree. One method is felling, which is the classic procedure you see in older movies. Arborists cut a section out of the base of the trunk, which allows the tree to fall over in one piece.

Felling is not as straightforward as it seems. The tree service has to ensure the trunk has room to fall without damaging anything. Then, the service has to ensure the cut guides the tree to fall in the desired direction.

The next type involves cutting the tree down in sections. The arborists cutting the tree may climb up using gear, or they may stand in a bucket on a cherry-picker-type crane. They cut off branches (a.k.a. limbing) and cut the trunk down a few feet at a time.

Cutting sections of the tree is often safer and doesn’t require as much horizontal clearance. However, the tree service still needs to ensure that the chunks of tree trunk won’t roll away and hit anything nearby.

Another type is crane removal, and it sounds exactly like what it is: Arborists use a crane to pull the tree up, or they cut up the tree while a crane supports the bulk. This procedure is appropriate when there’s not enough room around the tree for felling or cutting that lets chunks of the tree fall to the ground.

You Can’t Do It Yourself

Removing fully grown trees isn’t a DIY project. While you might be able to remove a sapling or very short tree, a fully grown tree is a much different matter. Professional tree services have the tools, knowledge, and insurance, to get the job done right. If you try to remove a large tree yourself, any mistakes you make could end up being very costly.
